2022-23 IFK Graduate Community Fellowship

The Institute on the Formation of Knowledge (IFK) invites graduate students pursuing research related to the formation of knowledge to apply for a workspace fellowship for dissertation research and writing. The IFK Graduate Community Fellowship will provide recipients with a pod (desk, bookshelf space, file cabinet) in the IFK’s recently renovated and modernized building at 5737 S. University Avenue during the 2022-23 academic year. 

PhD students from any UChicago Division or School may apply, provided they have reached candidacy by the application deadline and plan to be in residence during the academic year. Applicants must demonstrate current research interests that straddle multiple fields and address the formation of knowledge. 

Recipients of the Fellowship are also invited to take part in the social and academic life of the Institute, including its conferences, discussions, workshops, garden, social hours, and Taberna space, and the opportunity to contirbute to IFK’s academic blog Formations. This award is non-monetary and students can hold other awards while on the Institute fellowship, subject to the policies of their Division or School.

IFK Graduate Community Fellows will join a dynamic community of postdoctoral fellows and University faculty who study the process of knowledge formation from antiquity to the present day. We hope that the Graduate Community Fellowship will provide not only a productive space for writing and thinking, but also opportunities to enrich individual scholarship by bringing new perspectives to the work of the Fellows.

We will evaluate applicants based on the following criteria:

•  Research focus that clearly demonstrates a multi-disciplinary approach to questions related to the formation of knowledge; and,
•  Strength of submitted writing sample and transcript.

Recipients of the IFK Graduate Community Fellowship are expected to: 

• maintain residency on campus during the 2022-23 academic year and utilize the office pod provided; 
• write a one-page post for the Institute blog, Formations, connecting their research to current affairs;
• submit a one-page report, prior to the end of the academic year, on progress and results in dissertation research/writing related to the Institute’s focus on knowledge formation and multi-disciplinary research.

Please submit your application to ifk-info@uchicago.edu. The application should include: (1) a one-page letter explaining how your research relates to the formation of knowledge, (2) an up-to-date c.v., (3) a sample chapter, essay, or article, and, (4) a current official transcript.
