2023-24 Faculty Seed Grant

Submissions for 2023-24 now closed.

The Institute on the Formation of Knowledge offers one-year seed grants to faculty at the University of Chicago interested in pursuing research connected to the Institute's focus of knowledge formation. This includes, but is not limited to, research in connection with IFK’s 2023-2024 research theme of knowledge in diaspora. Applicants are welcome to collaborate with resident graduate students, postdocs, and faculty in investigating approaches, methodologies, and outcomes of this research agenda or other work related to investigating the approaches, methodologies, and outcomes of knowledge formation. The seed grant of $5,000 is intended to allow a first step into an area of research that may or may not lead to an application for the larger faculty research grant the following year. It can be used for help with research assistants, material expenses, trips to archives, or other expenses associated with developing a new research idea.

Faculty receiving seed grants are asked to submit a 1,000-word summary of their findings at the end of the year, write a post for the IFK blog about their research, participate in the Institute workshop series on Cultures and Knowledge, and present their research in one of the workshop sessions.

The deadline for submitting applications is midnight CST April 3, 2023. Applications sent via email will not be accepted. Recipients of the Faculty Seed Grant will be announced by late April. Please send any questions to ifk-info@uchicago.edu
