The Institute on the Formation of Knowledge (IFK) launched at the University of Chicago in 2015 as an interdivisional effort, and as the first of its kind anywhere, to examine the historical, social, and intellectual circumstances that give rise to different kinds of knowledge and to assess how this knowledge shapes the modern world. This new initiative brings together distinguished scholars from the humanities, social sciences, biological and physical sciences, divinity, law, business and public policy schools, to investigate questions with global impact and seeks to displace anachronistic readings of the way knowledge was constructed. A philanthropic investment to the Institute will support new faculty research, enable graduate students to complete dissertations in the final year of their Ph.D. program, bring in postdoctoral scholars each year, and host programs that invite international thinkers to Chicago to engage with our community.
